Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings loved to tell stories, even when she was a young child. When she learned how to write, she wrote stories on anything that was handy. If she couldn’t find a sheet of paper, she would write on paper bags! Her parents were delighted by her interest, and told her that she didn’t have to do jobs around the house when she was busy writing.
Later, Marjorie wanted very much to have her stories published, but did not have much success until she and her husband moved to Florida. There she met people who had contentedly lived in the deep woods for years, called “Crackers.” Their way of life fascinated her. When she wrote stories about them, she wrote with such excitement and enthusiasm that her stories finally were published.
