Zora Neale Hurston became one of the foremost black writers in the 1930s, but her career was tragically short. Her first novel, Jonah’s Gourd Vice, received glowing reviews. The Eatonville native was widely honored and settled in Daytona Beach, where she wrote and taught at Bethune-Cookman College.
