Barrier islands are present all over the globe, from the Equator north to the Arctic and south to the Antarctic, accounting for some 15% of Earth’s coastline. In the United States, they are present to some extent on the Pacific Coast, while nearly the entire lengths of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts are lined by barrier islands. The side of the Florida Peninsula that borders the Gulf of Mexico is considered to have the most diverse and interesting barrier island system in the world, and that is the primary topic of this book.
