In order to understand how a beach works it is necessary to consider the processes to which it is subjected. The beach environment is at the contact point between all three of the main earth systems: the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and lithosphere. The range in the motion and rate of scale of all three of these systems is great and wide-ranging. The scales of change in the beach may be as short as a single wave during a storm or as long as millennia when sea level is changing.
